Sun shines for Chale Community Project launch event

Under a banner specially designed by the Chale Arts, Crafts & Sewing Club, the official start of the Chale Community Project was celebrated at the new Project HQ near the Green in Chale.

The first air source heat pump has gone in as part of the Project’s pilot project on Spanners Close and visitors had the chance to have any questions about these answered, the Footprint Trust were on hand to give more general guidance about energy saving, the Chale Horticultural Society were there with Grow Your Own tips and to encourage people to enter their vegetables for the Chale Show in August and the Rural Health Trainers and Housing & Council Tax Benefits were able to take referrals from anyone wanting to know more. Peter Atkinson, one of the project’s Community Contacts, talked people through the newly launched website.

Actor Geoffrey Hughes, better known to some as Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances, kindly came along to support the event. Geoff lives locally and is a big advocate of sustainability on the Isle of Wight, in particular the sustainable use of timber resources on the island. His company, Woodend Enterprises, makes wood chip for biomass and wood mulch for garden borders.

The day was followed by a get-together of the Community Contacts who will be meeting regularly to discuss ideas for the Project. If you would be interested in being a Community Contact, an official ambassador for the Project, please contact Don at the Footprint Trust on 01983 822282.
